 Summary From Goodreads

For seventeen-year-old Aurora Lahey, survival is a lifestyle.

DEMONIC DESTINY
Aurora has the crappiest superpower on the planet. And it’s just unleashed a hit squad from hell. Demons are on the hunt, salivating to carve her carcass into confetti. ´

CHARISMATIC KILLERS
The Hex Boys—mysterious, hunky, and notorious for their trails of destruction—have the answers Aurora needs to survive. But their overload of deadly secrets and suspicious motives makes trusting them a potentially fatal move.

LETHAL ALLIES
The battle to save her family, herself, and stop demonic domination may cost Aurora everything worth living for, and force her to reveal her own dark secrets. But no worries. She needs the Hex Boys to pull this off, and, chances are, teaming up with these guys will get her killed anyway

My Review:

So this was actually the first book that I read in 2018 I've just been terribly terrible at getting around to writing a review for it. And honestly? It has set the bar pretty dang high for the rest of the books that I read this year, and has made me ask questions like:

Why is this such an unappreciated book? (much like Red Winter by Marie Annette)

How can I get this book more love that it so rightly deserves?

Why haven't I heard of this series before? (It's been out for 6 years and I'm just now reading it. SIX. YEARS.)

Why does Matty have such an extreme dislike for Aurora??!?

I very very very much enjoyed reading this book. It had everything I liked; paranormal factors, action, romance, a clumsy kick butt heroine who could take care of herself and will do anything for her friends/family but also trips over nothing, so there's that... More than one super swoony male character. I wouldn't call it a love... whatever shape all those people make because she only shows "real" interest to one of the guys, a super awesome cat named Van Helsing, quirky guardians, character building, story building,  and and and... lots of other things. Like how there was something LOL-worthy on almost every page. There were a lot of twists and turns, betrayals, revelations, etc...

I loved Aurora and how relatable she was, she was funny and said some things that made me want to cover my face. I love how amazing her family is. There's so much love and support going on there, and it just makes me smile.

I adore the boys. Have I said that yet? They are amazing. They're all so protective of Aurora, and they're also so dang funny it hurts. Not to mention how beautiful they are, and how well they work together.Yes, I even like Matthias, even though he can be a douche canoe.

It definitely wasn't perfect. There were some plot holes, and parts of it seemed like it jumped around without explanation, and I thought that I had missed something so I went back and re-read it to try and figure it out, but no, that's just how it was written.

But obviously that didn't take away anything from it. Because I still loved this book to bits and pieces. It was just like, I don't know, it hit me in all the feels, and  just made me so happy while I was reading it. I am trying not to spoil anything, especially since I have finished all the available books in the series, and I don't want to accidentally talk about something that comes later on. But oh my gosh, it gets better and better with each book.

I can't wait to see how Aurora's powers develop, and what other hijinks she gets herself into.

Review: Trying to Live With the Dead by B.L Brunnemer

Trying To Live With The Dead (The Veil Diaries, #1)

Trying to Live With The Dead
By B.L. Brunnemer
My Rating: 4.5 Stars
Publication Date: December 6, 2016

Date Read: January 2018
Kindle Edition, 351 Pages

Summary From Goodreads:

Hi, I’m Alexis Delaney. I’m your average 17-year-old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead. And push them away and, well, help them move on. So..okay, I’m not your average 17-year-old girl. For years I’ve been struggling to survive the souls still roaming around. The shitheads always seem to find me. Moving from town to town every few months never helped either. More dead just always find me. But things are changing for me now. I’m moving in with my uncle Rory and cousin Tara. I’m finally going to be able to do normal teenage stuff I’ve been missing out on. Right?

Well, if this one bitch of a ghost could leave me alone on campus that would be great. Especially since I haven’t told my new friends about my abilities. Can you believe this? Five good looking guys practically adopt me on my first day of school, and I still think they’re a bit nuts for it. Now if I can only just keep my life with the dead from mixing with my normal life, everything would be great. Yeah...I don’t see that happening either. But I’m going to give it a shot. Who knows? It might work.

My Review:

So let's just talk about this book for a minute. I found it awhile ago while searching Amazon's Kindle store (which I really need to stay away from because I have about a million other things to be doing {like reading my library books}) and I resisted the urge to buy it for quite awhile (yay me!) but with my weakness for RH books right now, I finally caved and bought the book, because it sounded superb.

And it is.

There's lots of character building, and I love how blunt and no nonsense Alexis is. She's got one heck of a sailor's mouth and she'll tell you exactly what she thinks if you're being stupid. It's actually very refreshing, because you'll always know where you stand with her.

But at the same time, the thing that stops her from seeming like a total B***h, is the fact that she cares. She's been hurt before (big time hurt) and yet, it hasn't hardened her heart. Yeah she's skeptical of the boys and other people at first, because she is trying to save herself the pain of them leaving when things get too real/weird. But she doesn't let that stop her from being protective of others that are being bullied.

I like the guys and their relationship with her. They're obnoxious and protective, and they'll do anything to keep her safe. She also has a really great relationship with her uncle Rory, which I really enjoyed reading. It's hard with some books when the main character is keeping this giant secret from her family and things just go bad at every turn because she has to lie to her family about why weird things happen. So this was a nice change of pace. Everyone is so supportive.

I'm not sure where the book is going as far as romance is concerned. As I am typing this, I am a good part into book 2 and it doesn't look like she's going to "be" with any of her original gang. In fact even though she comments about how good looking they are and what not, there isn't any jealousy on her part or theirs (at least as far as outward appearances go) when the guys are hitting on other girls or dating someone, or vice versa. In fact, one of them set Lexie up with Dylan... But I guess that's okay too, as long as everyone is happy. And since I still have two and a half books to go, who knows what's going to happen.

However, I don't like the way she calls the guys honey and sweetie. That's more of a term of endearment for a little kid or someone you're dating, and it just doesn't sound right when I read it. Also there are some grammatical errors that jumped out at me throughout the story, but it's not enough to make me stop reading it. Also, I really don't like the way she keeps saying sweet. Like, "I said sweetly" or "I asked still using my sweet voice" occasionally that wouldn't bother me, but it's very repetitive. But those are just my opinions and pet peeves, and it probably doesn't bother most people.

Overall, this was a great start to the series, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Kait's A-B-C of 2017 Part 1

So I did an A-Z book challenge last year, where I tried to read through the alphabet. I wanted to read 26 books where each one corresponded with a different letter of the alphabet. I didn't do too bad, the only letters I didn't manage to get were "M", "X", and "Z", and hopefully I'll do even better for this year. So, without further ado, here are the books I read for the A-Z challenge! Click on the picture to be re-routed to the corresponding Good Reads page to find out more about it. Also, I'm breaking this up into three separate posts so as not to bombard you all with one mega list.

Alex, Approximately
A This is a new spin on You've Got Mail, and it's just the bees knees. (Psst, I wrote a review for this one! Check it out by clicking HERE...)

By Your Side
B They get to spend the weekend locked in a library together... Yes, please (Check out my review for this one riiiiiight here

Classi9, Vol. 1
C

So this was a super amazing Manga Series. It's Manga/Anime versions of a whole bunch of different musical geniuses. My only problem with it, was the fact that there weren't enough volumes!

Daughter of the Pirate King (Daughter of the Pirate King, #1) D

I LOVE CAPTAIN HOOK... Oh wait, what I meant to say was, I love books about pirates, especially when it's written well. I tend to have a soft spot for fictional "bad boys" who are actually low key heroes (Captain Hook from OUAT, Warner from Shatter Me, Rhysand from ACOTAR, Dean Winchester, etc.) Plus, Alosa is my hero, so there's that too.

GeekerellaG

So this book is Cinderella meets Fandoms and Cosplay, and it's absolutely wonderful

HuntedH
This was one of the very first books that I read last year that actually really really impressed me. I love fairy tales that are retold, and this one knocked my socks off

It Started With Goodbye I

This one is a kind of sort of Cinderella retelling. I loved it, and the different relationships that form throughout.
